Tons of Shoots in Thailand

Thailand proved to be our most productive location yet.  We had at least 10 stock shoots, shot two-dozen Airbnbs, and even had some editorial work.  I was amazed at how much media is created there, from TV, to print ads, to commercials.  This means that placed like Bangkok are filled with tremendous talent for photo shoots.  There we worked with top-notch international models, makeup artists and hair stylists.  Had we stayed longer we would have utilized the vast network of sets and studios.  I have nothing bad to say about the people, food, or transportation in Bangkok, we loved it all.  Our return to Thailand can't come soon enough!

I really should have broken this up into multiple posts, but this will have to do.

Shooting for Stocksy: Europe Edition

In both France and Italy I had several production lifestyle shoots for Stocksy.  Justin has become a savvy producer and he's been a tremendous asset and has helped in the creation of lots of new work.  Here are just a few of the shoots we have worked on in the past months...

If anyone has the illusion that we're on an extended vacation, the sheer volume of work we've created should demonstrate that we are hustling out here (and loving every minute of it!).

Girls Wine Weekend Lifestyle Shoot

While I was up on the Central Coast shooting for some magazines I produced and shot a "girls wine weekend" concept for Stocksy.  My models were my longtime friend Becca and some of her girlfriends-- Mindy, Stacie, Caitlin, and Stephanie.  We bopped around a few Central Coast wineries and got to drink some fantastic wine.  What's more fun than a beautiful, sunny day, drinking wine with fun girls and making some photos?

Deanna at Griffith Park

I've been on the road a lot this month, but in a brief moment at home in LA I was able to snag the fabulous dancer/model Deanna Reeves for a shoot in Griffith Park.  We had a great time in the park and I definitely put her to work!  She was powering over boulders, balancing on logs, and running up and down steep hills. Oh the glamorous lives of models.

Production Shoot for Stocksy: Female Friends at the Beach

As a photographer you are always creating work a season or two ahead of when the images will be used.  Thus Christmas shoots in July and romantic Valentine's themed shoots are scheduled for November.  Famously Sports Illustrated models often have to brave frigid temperatures in bikinis to get that summertime look in the off season.  Luckily for this shoot, my models Brittany, Bia, and Amy and I had the great fortune to "endure" a 72 degree February day at the beach. It's rough.

The girls and I along with my trusty assistant Justin went out to Santa Monica for a fun "girls day at the beach" themed shoot.  The models were great and we had a lot of fun running around an almost empty So Cal beach.  You can see more images at my Stocksy page and even license them if you'd like.  Thanks so much to Amy, Bia and Brittany for having so much energy and making the shoot a blast!

Field to Vase Florists for Edible SLO Magazine

I've got new work out this week on the news stands for Edible SLO magazine.  This was a feature on florists on the Central Coast who are involved in the "field to vase" movement.  Each of the ladies in the article create beautiful floral arrangements and they strive to source their flowers and botanicals locally. You can pick up a copy of Edible SLO magazine now, or check out the digital version at EdibleSLO.com. The writer of the article, Kendra Aronson also has a great blog about the field to vase movement that you can see here.

Shooting for Emily Henderson Designs

The past few months I've been shooting with a new client-- designer, blogger, HGTV star, Emily Henderson.  I've photographed several things for her including a staff outing to the downtown LA fabric district for NatureBox, home holiday decor, DIY projects, and a Lo and Sons travel bag piece.

Emily and her team Ginny and Brady are just as awesome to work with as you'd expect.  I have so much respect for them putting out almost daily blog posts that are super involved and intricate. I'm lucky if I manage to get out a post a month!  Here is some work I've shot for them over the past few months.  To see more click on the links above.

It's been awesome  I get to shoot a variety of things for the team including more editorial stuff, interiors, product, DIY and design, and portraiture.  A nice opportunity to test my skills and try new things.

Rob Martin

It's a weird thing living in LA.  I think of myself as a country girl, but I've found myself oddly at home here. After almost 10 months as an Angeleno I am happy to report that I am super loving living in the big city.  I love my corner coffee shop, checking out various happy hours in the neighborhood, and I love that I can WALK, take Uber, and ride the subway to get around town.  My tired, old car is getting a much needed rest.  And it goes without saying that the tremendous amount of capital "c" Culture around is such a great perk.

One thing that has made the transition easier is that there are many old friends happen to live very close (sometimes across the street) to me.  In this vast city I have discovered that there are at least 10 people whom I knew prior to moving here living within 0.3 miles from me.  How cool is that?!?

One of those people is Rob Martin.  I had worked with Rob when I lived on the Central Coast on two other shoots: Lake Nacimento and Avila Beach.  He is a great model and has recently moved to LA to pursue modeling and acting.  I was happy to shoot some headshots for him as he enters this crazy industry down here.  It's great to see him grow and become such a handsome young man.

Emy Reynolds Band in the Studio

I love my ERB girls, Piper Denney and Emy Reynolds.  They are currently in the studio in Ojai   working on their latest album, due out Spring 2015.  I got a chance to shoot them in the studio a couple of weeks ago and got an early preview of some new songs.  As always their work makes me swoon.  Here are some of my favorite shots of the girls.  They have a show at the Lobero in Santa Barbara on Nov. 15th.  If you're in the area it's definitely worth checking out!

New Work with Domenique

I had the good fortune to be in Paso Robles on assignment when Domenique contacted me wanting to do a shoot.  Domenique and I had previously worked together to shoot an athletic/sportswear inspired shoot in Paso Robles and she is a rock star, so of course we made it happen.  We tried out a couple of different concepts and played around with wardrobe and scenery.  The light was spectacular, and Domenique's skin was luminescent. Here's some of my favorites from that day.

Harvest at Edible SLO

New season, new work at Edible SLO.  I was super stoked to have some of my harvest photos published in a photo essay for the magazine.

I also shot a story on some local businesses in the area including Komplete Kombucha, based in San Luis Obispo and Villacana Winery's RE:find Distillery in Paso Robles.

Years ago I had a friend that brewed her own kombucha and it was terrible.  Bitter, acrid, and way to powdery and green tasting.  I was pleasantly surprised that I really liked the brew made by Komplete Kombucha.  I tried their ginger flavor and their hibiscus, and both were fantastic.  They made me a kombucha convert overnight.  The company is made up of three young and ambitious entrepreneurs and I see big things in their future.

RE:find Distillery and Spirits is owned and operated by the truly lovely Monica and Alex Villacana.  They make vodka, gin, rye whiskey, and limoncello from the first press grape juice that comes from their own Villacana Winery during the winemaking process.  With two businesses to run, Monica and Alex are very busy people but on the day that I photographed them I found them to be energized and very sweet and hospitable.  They showed me around the distillery and tasting room and we chatted about the various projects they have in the works.  When the shoot was over they very generously gave me a bottle of my choosing to take home.  I went with the gin because there are few things better on a hot summer day than a gin and tonic.  Wow, was I impressed.  My boyfriend Justin proclaimed that it was even better than Hendrick's, which as all gin lovers know is the peak of gin perfection.  You can find RE:find products at cool bars and liquor stores everywhere, including my neighborhood Oaks Gourmet in Franklin Village in Hollywood!

Chinatown Lifestyle Shoot

I shoot a lot of different things in my life as a freelancer. I shoot food, travel, products, lifestyle, portraits, both in the commercial and editorial worlds.  People always ask me, "If you could only shoot one thing" or "which do you love the most" and it's so hard to choose because each type of work makes my heart flutter in a different way.  If my feet were held to the coals and I HAD to choose only one thing, I would choose the production lifestyle work like the images shown here.

It's so nice to take a concept, think about wardrobe, location, styling, mood and bring professionals into the picture who can take an idea and transform it into a reality.  On this shoot I worked with models Xiaolynn and John in iconic Chinatown, Los Angeles.   We shot at sunset (my favorite time to photograph) on a quiet mid-week evening.  They were flirty and joyful and I love the palette that the lanterns of Chinatown give to the images.

Stephanie Barkley

I photographed production designer/artist/comedian/actress Stephanie Barkley in her home in Los Angeles in early June.  She is a lady that wears many hats, and it was a blast to photograph her for her various projects.

If you follow her on Vine or You Tube, you know that she is very funny with dozens of characters in her back pocket to pull from.  Her puppets were my favorite!  Check Stephanie out on one of the many platforms she rocks...
