Tons of Shoots in Thailand

Thailand proved to be our most productive location yet.  We had at least 10 stock shoots, shot two-dozen Airbnbs, and even had some editorial work.  I was amazed at how much media is created there, from TV, to print ads, to commercials.  This means that placed like Bangkok are filled with tremendous talent for photo shoots.  There we worked with top-notch international models, makeup artists and hair stylists.  Had we stayed longer we would have utilized the vast network of sets and studios.  I have nothing bad to say about the people, food, or transportation in Bangkok, we loved it all.  Our return to Thailand can't come soon enough!

I really should have broken this up into multiple posts, but this will have to do.

Shooting for Stocksy: Europe Edition

In both France and Italy I had several production lifestyle shoots for Stocksy.  Justin has become a savvy producer and he's been a tremendous asset and has helped in the creation of lots of new work.  Here are just a few of the shoots we have worked on in the past months...

If anyone has the illusion that we're on an extended vacation, the sheer volume of work we've created should demonstrate that we are hustling out here (and loving every minute of it!).

Girls Wine Weekend Lifestyle Shoot

While I was up on the Central Coast shooting for some magazines I produced and shot a "girls wine weekend" concept for Stocksy.  My models were my longtime friend Becca and some of her girlfriends-- Mindy, Stacie, Caitlin, and Stephanie.  We bopped around a few Central Coast wineries and got to drink some fantastic wine.  What's more fun than a beautiful, sunny day, drinking wine with fun girls and making some photos?

Deanna at Griffith Park

I've been on the road a lot this month, but in a brief moment at home in LA I was able to snag the fabulous dancer/model Deanna Reeves for a shoot in Griffith Park.  We had a great time in the park and I definitely put her to work!  She was powering over boulders, balancing on logs, and running up and down steep hills. Oh the glamorous lives of models.

Production Shoot for Stocksy: Female Friends at the Beach

As a photographer you are always creating work a season or two ahead of when the images will be used.  Thus Christmas shoots in July and romantic Valentine's themed shoots are scheduled for November.  Famously Sports Illustrated models often have to brave frigid temperatures in bikinis to get that summertime look in the off season.  Luckily for this shoot, my models Brittany, Bia, and Amy and I had the great fortune to "endure" a 72 degree February day at the beach. It's rough.

The girls and I along with my trusty assistant Justin went out to Santa Monica for a fun "girls day at the beach" themed shoot.  The models were great and we had a lot of fun running around an almost empty So Cal beach.  You can see more images at my Stocksy page and even license them if you'd like.  Thanks so much to Amy, Bia and Brittany for having so much energy and making the shoot a blast!

New Work with Domenique

I had the good fortune to be in Paso Robles on assignment when Domenique contacted me wanting to do a shoot.  Domenique and I had previously worked together to shoot an athletic/sportswear inspired shoot in Paso Robles and she is a rock star, so of course we made it happen.  We tried out a couple of different concepts and played around with wardrobe and scenery.  The light was spectacular, and Domenique's skin was luminescent. Here's some of my favorites from that day.

Chinatown Lifestyle Shoot

I shoot a lot of different things in my life as a freelancer. I shoot food, travel, products, lifestyle, portraits, both in the commercial and editorial worlds.  People always ask me, "If you could only shoot one thing" or "which do you love the most" and it's so hard to choose because each type of work makes my heart flutter in a different way.  If my feet were held to the coals and I HAD to choose only one thing, I would choose the production lifestyle work like the images shown here.

It's so nice to take a concept, think about wardrobe, location, styling, mood and bring professionals into the picture who can take an idea and transform it into a reality.  On this shoot I worked with models Xiaolynn and John in iconic Chinatown, Los Angeles.   We shot at sunset (my favorite time to photograph) on a quiet mid-week evening.  They were flirty and joyful and I love the palette that the lanterns of Chinatown give to the images.

Brittany in Santa Monica

I've been shooting a ton of food and restaurants lately.  I love this, I really do, but it was so nice to take a day off from that and be out in the fresh air, romping around the Santa Monica Pier with model Brittany Cerra. The weather was perfect and we had a lot of fun.  Although we got shooed away from taking pictures in the arcade, we made some lively images at the amusement park and around the pier itself.

Couples in Buenos Aires

I shot a mini-project while I was living briefly in Buenos Aires, Argentina featuring ex-pat couples (like me and my boyfriend) who were also living abroad in South America.  I shot Sonia and Adam and Gustavo and Sophie who were from Spain, the US, and New Zealand.  Like us they were enjoying the cheap pesos, good wine, and beauty that Buenos Aires had to offer.  All of these images and more are available for licensing at Stocksy United

Lovely Domenique in Paso Robles

In the midst of packing for the move down south and finishing up client work, I wanted to take a moment to do a quick shoot with an awesome local model, Domenique Terry.  One of the professional creeds of photography that I try to abide by is ABS: always be shooting.  It's nice to do some personal work and keep focused on the bigger picture of growing as an artist and not just getting caught up in creating client prescribed imagery.

The sun was fading fast so we just shot for 30 minutes or so.  I love the autumnal light and how luminous her skin looks as the sun dipped below the horizon.  I'm leaving California soon, but when I return I know I'll be calling on Domenique to do another shoot together!

Stocksy and Me

I am super-duper excited to be a part of the new photo co-operative, Stocksy!  Stocksy is a new concept in stock photography that gives contributing photographers 50% of all normal licenses and 100% of all extended licenses.  Started by iStock founder, Bruce Livingston, Stocksy seeks to create a stock business model wherein its contributors can make a sustainable living from photography, and not sell their images for pennies on the dollar.

Stocksy has quickly become my go-to place to get inspired and see creative, beautiful imagery.  They have a very stringent acceptance policy and only accept work that transcends typical stock photography.  Some seriously talented photographers from all over the world have joined Stocksy, including a couple of my favorites, Kevin Russ and Darren Muir

I have a tiny portfolio with Stocksy thus far, you can see it here, however I'm looking forward to uploading more of my work when I get some time.  I'm thrilled to be part of such a cool community and I'm looking forward to getting more involved in the upcoming months.  I noticed that their imagery of Buenos Aires is quite slim, so hopefully I can fill in some gaps for them with my upcoming trip!

An Evening in the Vineyard

The lovely Esther Flink and I enjoyed bopping around several Central Coast vineyards last week during our sunset shoot.  Esther is a Toronto transplant to the area and she brought to the shoot the professionalism and charm of a seasoned model.  We had a great time racing around the country-side looking to capture the last bits of light.  Here's a small sampling of images from our shoot.

Test Shoot: Darrell

Darrell Snedeger and I shot earlier this week at the football stadium at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo.  We were fortunate that some workers were doing maintenance to the bleachers in the stadium, so we were able to sneak in.  Unfortunately when it came time to leave the workers had locked the exit so we had to scale a fence to get out.  Nothing like minor breaking and entering for the cause of a great location for a shoot.

Darrell was very sweet and game for anything.  I put him to work during our shoot and he kindly accommodated.  He is moving to LA in a few weeks, so I'm glad we got a chance to work together before he heads down south to pursue a career in modeling and acting.

Good luck in LA Darrell!  Thanks for helping me over the fence!

Christmas in California

The Avila Valley Barn is one of the most awesome places I know.  It's kind of like an old-timey East Coast farm stand that has the benefit of being in California, where they can grow produce and flowers year-round.  There is a huge variety of animals from dozens of chickens running around to alpacas, and emu.  The models especially bonded with the goats, who were eating dried leaves right out of their hands.

Only in California!  A young couple enjoys some ice cream while picking out their Christmas tree.

Both of the models were fantastic.  It was my first time working with Kylee and Eric, but they dove right in and got into the spirit of the shoot.  Only in California can you enjoy ice cream in the wintertime!

Lake Nacimiento Shoot

Anyone who is familiar with Paso Robles, California probably knows two basic things about it: they make great wine in Paso, and it gets really, really hot there.  Unfortunately me and the team got a a big dose of the heat during our shoot last week.  Clocking in at about 105 degrees, it was a warm one.  Everyone was a good sport and we kept the water super cold in ice and we hung out by the lake as much as possible.

Thanks so much to everyone involved!

Christina Diaz in Shell Beach

Model Christina Diaz is not only lovely, but the California surfer girl is also quite the academic. An aerospace engineering student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, she clearly has a bright future ahead of her.  We shot at Margo Dodd Tide Pools in Shell Beach, California on a beautiful summer afternoon. Rebecca Means was a fantastic assistant and the day was lots of fun.  Chosing to shoot at high tide left all parties soaked as we waded thigh-high through the water, trying to keep the gear dry.  Note to self: check the tide schedule before booking a beach shoot!

Avila Beach Test Shoot, Part II

More images!

I need to pick up the film this week (I shot with my Hasselblad and a Holga during the shoot), and then I will post some selections from the batch whenever I get it scanned.

Thanks again to the team! I couldn't have done this without you!

Avila Beach Test Shoot, Part 1

I've been editing all week, and although I'm not quite finished, I thought I'd get some images up for you all to see.  The models and crew were fantasic.  I cannot thank everyone enough!  I am very pleased with what we created, and would hire you all again in the future.
